Stornappstinden

Stornappstinden was our first hike in Lofoten, and possibly our hike with the worst weather. High winds, low fog and intermittent rain made for poor visibility and cold hands. One wind gust knocked my son off his feet.

Stornappstinden is a steeper alternative to Offersoykamen, offering views to the northeast of Himmeltinden, Haukland beach, Mannen, Veggen and Offersoykamen itself. It also has views to the southwest of Storvatnet and Flagstad Beach and to the south of Flagstadoya island. It is much less crowded, in part because it climbs 2170 ft in 1.6 miles to the summit.

We had intermittent views to the south and southwest, including morning light peering through the fog over Flakstadopollen Bay. This made for some good photos on the ascent. When we reached the summit, the fog was dense and wind was brisk. We could not see Huakland Beach or adjacent mountains. We had a brief partial clearing with views of Offersoykamen (below). But we missed out on the great northeast view for which this hike is reknown.

Stornappstinden is on the short list of hikes, along with Munken, which I would repeat on a future visit because the main event was obscured by weather. This hike ranks low on our list from Lofoten, but I could imagine this being a truly great experience if caught in the right conditions.
