Boquillas Canyon

Boquillas Canyon trail is short walk to another beautiful canyon formed by geological erosion from the Rio Grande. The canyon is located just downstream from the Rio Grande Village and several miles upstream from Marufo Vega.

The views from Boquillas Canyon are beautiful. We did this trail shortly after sunrise to beat the crowds. There are wide beaches on the bank of the Rio Grande on both sides, making it easy to walk around and explore. Nearby is the river crossing to Boquillas del Carmen, a tourist town on the Mexico side of the river. The US border patrol runs several trips across the river per week, but not on the day we visited.

Boquillas Canyon is at the far end of the road on the Southeast side of Big Bend. It is a long drive to reach it from where we were staying near Terlingua. It is a worthwhile stop if you have other places you plan to visit in the area, such as Boquillas del Carmen, Marufo Vega, Pine Canyon or Ernst Tinaja, but probably wouldn’t be worth the drive just to visit the canyon. We coupled this hike with Pine Canyon and The Window trail in the late afternoon, which made for a nice recovery day.
