Best Hikes of Lofoten

While in Lofoten, we did 11 hikes in 9 days. Five hikes on Moskenesoya, four on Flakstadoya and two on Austvagoya. Below I rank the hikes based on our experience, acknowledging that the list is heavily influenced by weather, time of day and crowds and would potentially change under different conditions. Equally important is the second list below, which is the hikes we didn’t get to or discovered during our visit and are on the list for our next trip to Lofoten.

Best Hikes of Lofoten:

  1. Narvtinden- Great location in center of Moskenesoya. Challenging summit. Epic diversity of views. Low crowds. Checks all the boxes
  2. Nesheia- Under the radar hike. Unique topography. Great scenes of Lofoten coastline and Nusford fishing village.
  3. Horseid Beach and Markan- Dramatic ferry ride to and from the trailhead. World class wild white sand beach. Great views of Solbhornvagnet and surrounding mountains. Complete day.
  4. Munken and Munkebu- One of the great backcountry areas in all of Lofoten. Numerous lakes, waterfalls and jagged peaks. Ranked lower due to bad weather on the day we hiked. Would repeat.
  5. Matmora- Epic views from the plateau. Best hike in Austvagoya.
  6. Reinebringen- World famous viewpoint overlooking Reine, adjacent fjords and mountains. Great at sunset. Crowded.
  7. Blekktinden- Bird’s eye view of Flakstadpollen Bay. Few people. Loop hike.
  8. Volanstinden- the Shark’s Fin. Unique mountain shape. Great views to the northwest from the summit and over Sundstraumen Strait.
  9. Trolldalsvatnet and Ovrevatnet-  Low elevation hike to three lakes. Good choice for a day with subpar weather. Nice views of coastline, farm land and colorful vegetation.
  10. Stornappstinden- Our experience was limited by inclement weather. Potentially a top tier hike on a clear day. 360 degree views. Low crowds. Would repeat.
  11. Ryten- Crowded. Pay to park. Wait in line for photos at the viewpoint. Good scenery, but mediocre experience.
